Submit one project no larger than

Library by June 13, 2013. Projects will
be displayed in the library until June
20, 2013. All projects must be picked
up on June 20, 2013.
Submitted projects will be judged on
creativity, originality, and relation to

Watercolors, archaeology, computers .... oh my!

Sign ups are now being accepted for summer enrichment classes at the Colfax Library.   Classes start in June and include Archaeological Discoveries, Tablet Computers, Community Chamber Music, Belly Dance and a variety of Watercolor Painting workshops. Many are limited to one class instead of in a series due to the busy nature of resident’s summer schedules.

Sponsored by Community Colleges of Spokane, these non-credit classes are offered at a very low cost to keep residents informed, active and engaged. Make attractive garden markers

Are you looking for a unique way to identify the plants in your garden? Learn to make attractive crop markers from spoons with Judi Gray of Whitman County Recycling on Weds, May 29 at noon in the Colfax Library. All materials will be provided in this free workshop and participants are welcome to bring a sack lunch if they desire.

Whitman County and Moscow Recycling along with a group of concerned citizens have formed “A Greener Palouse” to provide these and other classes free of charge throughout both counties. The goal is to educate citizens about recycling and creative ways to save our environment by reusing household items that would normally be thrown away.

Teen & Adult Summer Reading @ WCL

Who says Summer Reading is just for kids? Certainly not the Whitman County Library. Adult/Teen Summer Reading kicks off on June 1 and continues through August 30. All 14 branches offer special programs designed to meet the interests of each community.


A countywide program is also being offered to WCL patrons. Read or listen to three books, write a brief review to win a prize and be entered in a drawing for both local and countywide prizes. The teen prize drawing is for an awesome Ultra HD Flip Video Camera. The adults may win a $50 Rosauers certificate. Entry forms are available at every branch and on the Whitman County Library website. Forms may be submitted online on the Whitman County Library website or dropped off at your local branch. Additional cooking classes coming to the library system in May include Super Salads on May 29 at 4 p.m. in Oakesdale and It’s a Wrap on May 29 at 6 p.m. in Tekoa. Free gardening workshops this weekend!

Four free gardening workshops by horticulturist Donna Hanson are scheduled
at a number of Whitman County Library locations. The first happens Saturday,
May 18 at 10 a.m. in Palouse and is called Low Maintenance Landscaping. The
remaining workshops focus on container gardening and they are scheduled in
Albion on May 18 from 1:30-3:30 and repeated on Sunday in Farmington from
12-2 p.m. and from 3-5 p.m. in Colfax.

Public invited to May 21st Colfax Chamber meeting... rsvp today!

Two students from Colfax High School will demonstrate their senior projects at the Colfax Chamber of Commerce luncheon on Tuesday, May 21 at noon at the Colfax Library. Library. Kristie Kirkpatrick, the library’s director will close the meeting with an update on the Community Enrichment Center. 

Emma Gingerich and Rachel Napier of the Colfax Senior class will demonstrate their projects, which are a culmination of a year of expanded learning. Gingerich choreographed a dance team routine while Napier wrote a book of her experiences that is a thiry day devotional for teens with parent’s in prison.

CHS senior projects are required to fit within two of the following categories: academic, community service, career, or personal growth with students committing a minimum of 20 hours on their project or 30 hours of job shadowing.  Gingerich and Napier will share what they have learned and also a product from their efforts.

Colfax Chamber luncheons are open to the public and Fonks will serve lunch for $10.  Please RSVP to the Chamber office at 397-3712 by May 16 for a lunch count.

Upcoming Library Closure-May 17

All 14 branches of Whitman County Library will close Friday, May 17 for an
all-staff training workshop. Due dates for library materials have been
extended in anticipation of the closure and no late fines will be charged
for these days. Bookdrops will remain open in all locations accepting
returned items. Access to the library’s catalog, downloadable audio and
e-books, subscription databases like LiveMocha foreign language instruction
and the online librarian will still be available by visiting the library’s
website at www.whitco.lib.wa.us. For more information about library closures
or upcoming community programs, the Library Events calendar is also
accessible from the library website.
Locations affected by the closure are: Colfax, Endicott, Palouse, St. John,
and Uniontown. Residents may call the library at 397-4366 or toll-free at
1-877-733-3375 for information, details regarding the closure or renewal of
materials.

Vegetable gardening workshops this weekend!

WCL brings you three opporunities to attend a free workshop on small vegetable gardening by horticulturist Donna Hanson. Dates are:

Saturday, May 4 at 10 a.m. in the Albion Library 
Sunday, May 5 at noon in the Farmington Library
Sunday, May 5 at  3 pm in the Colfax Library.

Hanson teaches methods for choosing and maintaining the best vegetables for small spaces.

Experience Yoga Bliss

WCL brings you two great opportunities to experience Yoga Bliss! First is Friday, May 3 at 5 p.m. at the Palouse Library and next is as the Oakesdale Library on Saturday, May 11 at 11 a.m. 

These free hour-long classes are presented by Dawn Bennett, co-owner of Bliss in Colfax and teaches participants simple and easy Yoga movements that benefit the body and mind. No yoga experience is required and most movements will be from a sitting position. Dawn is a licensed massage therapist and yoga instructor who often combines the elements of both practices.
