Dryland comes tomorrow to LaCrosse!

Singer, songwriter Hank Cramer brings “Music Across the Palouse” to

eleven library locations the last week of March.  With his booming bass voice, vintage flat top guitar, and a wry sense of humor, Hank’s shows are an experience you won’t want to miss. Hank’s programs are geared to all ages in partnership with Humanities Washington.

 In “Music Across the Palouse,” Hank is providing three different programs. “The Seven Tongues of Flame: Ireland’s Easter Rebellion of 1916,” shows the power of music and poetry to change government when violence fails. In “Through a Soldier’s Eyes: Wilson Cramer’s Civil War,” Hank portrays his great-grandfather, a Civil War veteran, as he shares  battle experiences, thoughts on the causes of the conflict, and the lessons learned in the war. “The Family Concert” is an acoustic blend of folk and country music popular with all ages that includes the historical events that shaped these genres.

March Library Board meeting rescheduled for March 12

The Whitman County Library Board of Trustees meeting set for Monday, March 16 has been rescheduled for Thursday, March 12 from 5-5:15 p.m. in the Colfax Branch. Due to a board training session immediately following the meeting, the March agenda will be limited to financial business. Food For Fines Thanks You

Whitman County Library and area food pantries thank the 104 residents who donated $700 in non-perishable food and toiletry items for the fifteenth annual Food for Fines drive. Donations came in throughout Whitman County with almost 1/3 of those not attached to the waiving of library fines. When the last cart of Food for Fines were brought to Council on Aging Director Paige Collins exclaimed, “What a BRILLIANT way to have folks take care of their fines, and do a LOT of good in the meanwhile!” Food for Fines is held each February when area pantries report more people struggling with high heat bills and difficulty feeding their hungry families.

Free computer assistance!

Whitman County Library is offering basic computer skills assistance. This includes everything from, Microsoft Word and Excel, to setting up an email and social media accounts, to typing a letters, building address books, or using library resources and Rural Heritage. The library can also help you started with free online classes through Microsoft IT Academy which are tailored to your skill level and pace. Upcoming classes at community libraries are as follows:

State of the City ... come listen!

State of the City Address

 

Colfax Mayor Todd Vanek joins the Colfax Chamber of Commerce's monthly luncheon lecture series for the annual State of the City Address at noon, Tuesday, March 17th at the Colfax Library.

 

The State of the City Address is the most popular of the Colfax Chamber of Commerce’s monthly guest lecture series. Mayor Vanek will go over the current city economy, work plans, and updates that will affect the city. The Mayor and city administrator Mike Rizzitiello have additionally just returned from the capital. Come hear what your legislators have to say about the future of Colfax.

 

This meeting is free and open to the public; however, Lunch can be purchased for $12.60 on eventbrite.com, colfaxchamber.org, or $11 in person at the Chamber office. The Colfax Library is hosting the event and lunch will be catered by the Palouse Hyde Out featuring a baked potato bar.  Attendees should plan to RSVP by March 13th.

A rusk is a very hard and dry biscuit that was introduced to South Africa by the Dutch in the late 1600’s. They were essentially double-baked bread dough without preservatives. Because of this they would travel well and keep for an extended period of time without spoilage. The term Rusk comes from the Afrikaans term for biscuit. There are many variations to the recipe to fit any desired taste, including spices, chocolate, raisins, oat bran, currants, or cinnamon. Today they are eaten as a breakfast or afternoon snack. They are usually dunked in coffee or tea, or can just be eaten dry.
Recipe
0.8 cup of butter
1 ¾ cups of sugar
2 cups buttermilk
1 teaspoon lemon juice
3 eggs
7 cups of self-rising flour
2 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
6 cups of wheat or bran flakes
1 ½ cups uncooked oats
½ cup chopped almonds

Melt butter and let it cool.
Beat together eggs, sugar, buttermilk, and melted butter.
Sift flour, baking powder, and salt together.
Add wheat/bran flakes, oats, and almonds.
Add wet ingredients to dry ingredients. (Very thick mixture)
Put in oven pan (9X13) lined with foil.
Bake 25 minutes at 390 degrees.
Reduce to 350 degrees for another 25 minutes or until brown.
Cool slightly before removing from pan.
Slice into finger sized slices.
Place on drying rack in oven at 175 degrees until brittle, crunchy, and dry.

March library board meeting rescheduled

The Whitman County Library Board of Trustees meeting set for Monday, March 16 has been rescheduled for Thursday, March 12 from 5-5:15 p.m. in the Colfax Branch. Due to a board training session immediately following the meeting, the March agenda will be limited to financial business. SUBJECT:         Explore eReaders, Tablets and other Tech Toys

Thinking of buying your first digital device or upgrading from an eReader to a tablet?  Whitman County Library is taking the Washington State Library’s digital menagerie on a county-wide tour between March 5 and 16.  According to Community Services Librarian Clancy Pool, “This is a chance test drive over 20 different devices.  Kindles, Nooks, ipads, and small laptops are just some of the wide range of technology toys available for a hands-on experience during the open house programs.”
