Superhero America: The Comic-Book Character as Historical Lens

Andrew Wahl“Superhero America: The Comic-Book Character as Historical Lens”, a series of family programs by T. Andrew Wahl come to six Whitman County and Neill Public Library location during the last week in June. The program is free thanks to a grant from Humanities Washington and local support from Friends groups from both libraries.
Since the revolutionary debut of Superman in 1938, the American superhero has been a regular part of our pop culture landscape. In this interactive multimedia presentation, journalist and comic book historian, T. Andrew Wahl, explores how historical events and shifting social mores can be seen in the evolution of characters from Wonder Woman to Spider-Man. Using audience members' memories as a springboard, this conversation connects comic book superheroes (and the occasional villain!) to historical topics including war, the advancement of civil rights, and the societal impacts of technology.
