Crazy 8s Math Club is back! Register TODAY!

Can kids learn to love math as much as playtime or dessert? According to educational experts, the answer is, yes!  The Whitman County Library agrees by combining literacy and math for an over-the-top after-school club designed to gets kids fired up about numbers. Library branches in Tekoa, St. John and Colfax are host locations to Crazy 8s Clubs for wacky math adventures provided by the Bedtime Math Foundation.

Bedtime Math is a nonprofit organization that seeks to put the fun and discovery back into learning math. Its core product is a zany daily online math problem that parents can do with their kids, to make nightly math as common and beloved as the bedtime story.  Bedtime Math has expanded to create lively, hands-on math experiences for youth in libraries and afterschool programs throughout the nation.

The Colfax Library branch works with Washington State University’s Center for Civic Engagement. The college students act as coaches and help guide the kids through engaging activities.  Crazy 8s is recreational, not schoolwork, but the activities align with the Common Core State Standards.  “There hasn’t been anything the kids didn’t have fun with, from glow stick shapes and tessellations to the zip-line and dice throwing,” said Sheri Miller, Youth Services Manager. “The kids come in and cannot wait to find out what we’re doing next!”

The Whitman County Library’s Crazy 8s Club is designed for small groups of 12-16 kids at two age levels. It is time for math to become the cool thing to do after school at your public library. Space is limited, so contact your local branch for availability, dates and times.  For details, please visit www.bedtimemath.org or contact the Whitman County Library toll free at 877-733-3375.
