Lake Missoula Flood presentation July 8, Colfax & St. John

On July 8 artist, photographer, and writer Rick Thompson presents his research uncovering the effects of the Lake Missoula Flood in Northwest Oregon & Southwest Washington. This catastrophic flood propelled over 500 cubic miles of water, ice, rock and mud across eastern Washington, further cut the Columbia River Gorge, covered the Willamette Valley with up to 400 feet of water and left gravel bars miles wide and hundreds of feet high.

With color photos, topographical maps and space photos Mr. Thompson shows the signs still visible today. There are two opportunities to see this great program:

Tues, July 8The St. John library at noon
or the Norma McGregor room in the Colfax library at 7 pm.

THANKS to these recent honorees....

Whitman County Library developed the Supporter of the Month award in 2008 to recognize individuals, groups and businesses for their invaluable contributions. It is my honor to name the most recent recipients.

Wanda Alderman of Steptoe is a dedicated library supporter and volunteer, recently completing her second year as President of the Friends of WCL. Wanda is an integral part of the library’s Rural Heritage project, gathering images and interviewing longtime residents about our region’s history and heritage. Wanda is a fixture within the library and the community.

Cathy Jones of Malden leads local library crafting programs, planning the projects and supplying all materials. Cathy also helps with Summer Reading programs in both the Malden and Rosalia Branches and assists wherever she is needed. Manager Karen Wallace says, “I couldn’t provide such great service without Cathy!”

As town clerk, Linda Hayes of St. John welcomes every community member into the library/town hall with a smile. She supports the library with her time and resources and most amazing of all, loves the noisy children’s programs that happen just outside her office.

State Bank of Farmington has supported the library’s Summer Reading programs for as long as anyone can remember. As one of the few Farmington businesses, State Bank is dedicated and supportive of their small community.

As a longtime member of the Friends of WCL, Columbia Bank regularly announces the library’s events on their Colfax reader board and they generously support employee Teri Kneale’s work with the Friends of WCL!

First Wind and Palouse Wind Farm Support Specialist Shawn Elston worked side-by-side with library officials to develop a plan to best serve the communities of Oakesdale and Rosalia. As a result, First Wind generously funds Saturday hours in the Rosalia Library and two community programs each month in the Oakesdale Library.

Learn about Summer Reading programs for all ages...

Whitman County Library invites you to participate in free, fun and educational Summer Reading programs. It is for all ages and it is for you! Youth who read (or are read to) 10 books or 10 hours during the summer qualify for prizes following the last exciting library program. Teens and adults can also participate by reading and reviewing three books over the summer. Prizes for completion include coffee drinks or other treats donated by local vendors and a chance at county-wide grand prize certificates.

Join us as readers are transformed into scientists this summer as the Whitman County Library presents, “Fizz, Boom, Read!” during the 2014 Summer Reading program. Activities include visits from area science museums and scientists, WSU Birds of Prey, Lego contests, magicians, robot building and more. The Summer Reading Program is open to ages zero through adult with exciting presentations, fantastic prizes, and educational Storytimes.

Last year, more than 5,000 reading hours were logged by youth completing the Summer Reading requirements while enjoying free library programs and unforgettable entertainment. Thanks to support from the Friends of the Library, local merchants and individual donations, libraries countywide are offering lots of incentives to read. These include everything from free food and certificates, gift baskets, Palouse Empire Fair wristbands, to Sprint Boat tickets.

For a complete lineup of summer events and locations, stop by any Whitman County Library branch, “like” us on Facebook or visit the library’s online calendar at www.whitco.lib.wa.us. Summer Reading signups for youth or completion forms for teens and adults can be accessed from the library’s website or by calling toll-free 877-733-3375. Summer Reading 2014…Check It Out!

Join us this Thursday for a community reception!

$300 Prize to be awarded at artists reception June 5th!

A $300 cash prize will be awarded Thursday, June 5 at the H'Art of the Palouse Banner artists reception at 7 p.m. in the Colfax Library.  This is the second year a cash award is being offered for the top adult banner.  The winner  was selected by a jury of local artists last weekend and will be announced at the reception.  The award is in addition to the annual People's Choice Awards for the favorite adult and youth banners selected by a vote of the public.

The cash award is donated by Dick and Pauline Gebhardt of Colfax.  Gebhardt disqualified his own banner from the award competition.  Gebhardt, a member of the Colfax Arts Council, came up with the idea for the banner competition after seeing a similar type of competition in southern California.  The Arts Council tweaked the competition idea to fit Colfax and has now run the competition for seven years.

Also to be awarded at the reception are the adult and youth People's Choice Awards. Two of the sites for voting had run out of ballots by Saturday and were promptly restocked.  Residents have until Thursday, just prior to the reception to vote.  A voting "paint bucket" will also be available at the entrance to the reception for last minute voters.  There is also still time for donations to the People's Choice award, gifts or cash, at City Hall and at the Library.

Artists to be honored are Betina Workman, Carol Gay,  Dick Gebhardt,  Jerry Jones, Matthew Wysack and Brianna Reynolds, adults from Colfax; adults Sara Yates of Lacrosse and Kellie Berntgen of Oakesdale;  and youth Eden Workman of Colfax.

Adult & Teen Summer Reading - 2014

Adult and Teen Summer Reading 2014 Overview

Reading just got more lucrative for Whitman County adults. Now all adult finishers in the library’s Summer Reading program will be included in a grand prize drawing for a $50 Rosauers gift card courtesy of the Friends of Whitman County Library.
To enter, adults just need to read and briefly review 3 books by August 29. Besides the countywide grand prize drawings, finishers will receive a variety of prizes from local business sponsors. Entry forms are available at all 14 branch locations or online from the Whitman County Library website.
Teens Summer Reading also continues through the end of August, with grand prize being a $50 Amazon Gift Card.  Three short book reviews submitted online or in person is all that’s needed for entry. Additional prizes and drawings for teens vary by branch location.

Who says Summer Reading is just for kids? Certainly not the Whitman County Library. Adult/Teen Summer Reading kicks off on June 1 and continues through August 29. All 14 branches offer special programs designed to meet the interests of each community.

A countywide program is also being offered to WCL patrons. Read or listen to three books, write a brief review to win a prize and be entered in a drawing for both local and countywide prizes. The teen prize drawing is for a $50 Amazon Gift Card. The adults may win a $50 Rosauers certificate. Entry forms are available at every branch and on the Whitman County Library website. Forms may be submitted online on the Whitman County Library website or dropped off at your local branch. Call toll free 877-733-3375 for details.
