Sign up today for Helen Appel's class ... and others

Learn home food preservation techniques like freezing, drying and canning from local expert Helen Appel each Tuesday from 1-2 p.m. starting May 6 and running through May 27 at the Colfax Library. Helen has more than 60 years of experience preserving food. She began as a girl assisting her mom and became proficient during her 54 years of marriage to Dick Appel and while cooking for their family of 10 children, 30 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. Helen estimates that she still cans more than 1000 jars of food per year thanks in large part to a family garden that is shared with their daughter Carolyn Kunkel. Helen also serves as a canning judge at the Latah County Fair each year.

Helen’s classes run for 4 weeks at a fee of $13 through Community Colleges of Spokane. Additional CCS classes set for spring include American Red Cross First Aid, Ukulele, Digital Photograph, Garden Mosaics, Watercolor and other forms of art. Classes are taught by local experts and college level instructors without tests or grades. To register for Home Food Preservation or other classes call 800-845-3324 or online at www.iel.spokane.edu/ACT2.

Artwork at your library!

Come see the amazing watercolors of Rob Smith in the foyer of the Colfax Library!

Tuesday, April 1, 2014

Join us for this one of a kind presentation...

Dr. Otto Stevens presents an all new photographic tour of the Palouse on Saturday, April 5 at 1 p.m. in the Oakesdale Library and on Wednesday, April 9 at noon in the Colfax Library. During this fast paced 45 minute presentation called “The Palouse 2013,” Dr. Stevens shares 275 images while narrating the history, geography, culture and other interesting facts about our region.

The beginning images were taken on January 4, 2013, of the “Frosty Palouse Falls” when the temperature had been below freezing for 10 continuous days & nights, and icicles covered the adjacent rocks.  Next are views of the authentic 1890’s furnishings of most of the rooms of a beautiful, warm, Victorian private home.  Add several Field Trip loops through the croplands of the rolling Palouse hills to the south, east and west, with 58 new Wind Generators to the north.  Contrast the bare walls of a pioneer Swedish immigrant church on the corner of an Idaho farm, with the beauty of the altar and stained glass windows of a small town church that was designed by Spokane’s first trained architect.

For more information about Dr. Steven’s presentations or the reserve a $5 sack lunch for the April 9th presentation in Colfax, contact Whitman County Library at 509-397-4366.
