Pete and Peggy Bryan - WCL Supporters of the Month

Pete and Peggy Bryan were honored as Whitman County Library’s Supporter of the Month at the Grillbilly Café in Lacrosse. The Board made the presentation after their July 17 meeting which was held in the newly renovated Market and Library.

Pete and Peggy have been longtime volunteers, advocates and supporters of the library both in Lacrosse and countywide.  They’ve donated to building projects in a number of communities, bestowed many memorial donations, volunteered their time for library events and projects, donated and purchased auction items, and even supported summer readers in their community this year.  If that weren’t enough, Peggy regularly bakes gifts on behalf of the library and most important gives here heart and soul to her work as the library’s Business Manager. Pete and Peggy’s impact upon WCL has been invaluable.  

The Board of Trustees, administration and Friends of the Whitman County Rural Library District sponsor the Library Supporter of the Month award as a way of recognizing individuals and groups that play an invaluable role in supporting and supplementing the library’s budget and activities. 2 opportunities to feel great on Monday, July 22

Yoga Bliss is a lifestyle ... incorporating simple Yoga moves into your everyday life to soothe your body and soul. Dawn Bennett of Bliss studio leads this gentle workshop on Monday, July 22 in Colfax repeating her one hour session at noon and 5:30. This class is free thanks to grant funding from the Institutue of Museums and Libraries.

STEM For Kids-July 26-27

UNI-Portable Science, Technology, Engineering and Math Lab for Young Children

The UNI(verse) Lab comes to the Concrete River Festival in Colfax on July 26-27 thanks to a partnership between the Foundation for Early Learning and the Early Learning Public Library Partnership (ELPLP). The UNI is a street level learning zone supporting Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) for young children. Kids and those who care for them, get the chance to learn more about the importance of STEM, peruse a selection of books and participate in interactive activities such as balances, hand bells and counting machines.
As an ELPLP partner, the Whitman County Library was chosen for this state-wide project to help supplement the summer reading outreach efforts and programs. The UNI: A portable reading room is a product of Street Lab, a non-profit based in New York City and was developed with the "conviction that books and learning should be prominent and accessible." This is an innovative approach to connecting families, children, caregivers to early learning in a pleasant, safe and familiar environment. It's also a great way to enjoy the summer sunshine!

Karate and Zumba help you get fit!

Thursday nights bring fitness opportunities to Colfax. Zumba is from 7-8 pm in the library for older teens and adults. Pay by the class or by the month.

Karate is for kids 4-12 at 6 pm and 13-adult at 7 p.m. Class if free but all participants must have a signed waiver to participate. For details, call 509-397-4366.

TONIGHT ... Free Karate classes for kids, teens and adults

Free Karate from instructor Jeanelle Miller continues for each Tuesday and Thursday through the summer. Class for kids 4-12 years is from 6-7 pm while class for teens and adults is from 7-8 p.m. Both are held in The Center annex just south of the library. All participants must sign a waiver and come dressed ready to work out. Call the library at 397-4366 for details.

Blood Drive-Tuesday, July 23

Colfax Library Hosts INBC Blood Drive July 23, 2:30-5:30 p.m.

The gift of blood is the gift of life. You can save the lives of three people by donating blood Tuesday, July 23 at the Colfax Library from 2:30-5:30 p.m. Appointments are being taken by contacting the library at 509-397-4366 or the Inland Northwest Blood Center at www.inbcsaves.org.

According to the Inland Northwest Blood Center, here are a few facts about donations:
1. Every 2 seconds, someone in the United States needs a blood product.
2. Although 60% of Americans are eligible to donate blood, only approximately 5% actually do.
3. It is estimated that one in three individuals will need a blood product sometime during their life.

Walk-ins will be seen on a first come, first serve basis with photo I.D. required. Donors should drink plenty of fluids and eat a meal at least two hours prior to arrival. The entire list of eligibility criteria can be found by  contacting the Inland Northwest Blood Center at www.inbc2.org or by calling toll-free 800-423-0151.

Summer classes at the library

There is still time to register for a few summer classes at the Colfax Library. This Saturday is Great Archaelogical Discoveries from 1-4 pm at a cost of just $11. The St. John Library is sponsoring a Babysitting Certification Course on Tuesday, August 13 from 9:00 to 3:00. This broad ranging class is designed for ages 9 to 17. Topics covered include: • Child development • Nutrition and special diets • Dealing with emergencies • CPR training with certification available for age 12 and older • Age appropriate activities • Advertising and business practices
A minimum of 10 students required for the class. Thanks to support from the Friends of the Library, cost per student is $15. Preregistration is required.

eREADS at WCL

New Titles on our Nook SimpleTouch

Through the eREADS in eWashington program library patrons can check out a NOOK Simple Touch, pre-loaded with a selection of titles. The goal of the project is to demystify the eReading experience for library patrons and connect libraries through resource sharing. Six library systems in a five-county area are participating. Patrons with a Whitman County Library card have the option of checking out one of the NOOKs. We are currently circulating NOOKs containing the genres Classics and General/Literary Fiction. A listing of the current titles is below.
Currently, these NOOKs are only available for checkout from the Colfax Branch Library. Please call the Colfax Library at 509-397-4366 or toll-free at 877-733-3375 for questions or to be placed on the waiting list.
The project is funded through a grant from the Washington State Library and the Institute of Museum and Library Services.
