September is National Library Card Sign Up Month

September is Library Card Sign-Up Month and the Whitman County Library (WCL) System wants to make sure that all youth and adults in the area have the smartest card of all – a library card.
Public library programming and the vast collection of books, videos and resources make a difference in the lives of people for a variety of reasons.  Whether you are a student at school or a student in life, the library provides engaging programs, reading and listening choices for people from all backgrounds to become excited and enthusiastic learners.

“A library card has always been the most important school supply,” says Sheri Miller, WCL Youth Manager. “Today’s libraries are thriving community centers with technology hubs that many rely on as either their first or only choice for computer and Internet access.  There’s a lot happening at the Whitman County Libraries and the best part for children, teens, parents, adults and seniors - is that it is free with a library card.” 

Activities at the 14 branches of Whitman County Library during Library Card Sign-Up Month include events such as Early Learning Storytimes, author visits, exhibits, educational classes, after school programs, and more.  The Friends of WCL help to promote this event by offering a chance at two $25 certificate drawings to those signing up for a new card.

Observed since 1987, Library Card Sign-Up Month is a time when the American Library Association (ALA) promotes the importance of your public library. Bread Making-October 13-Colfax Library

Bread making and a full lineup of enrichment classes announced for Colfax

Learn the art of bread making from Kelli Collins and tour Joseph’s Grainery as part of a new lineup of fall classes at the Colfax Library. This farm to table experience is Monday, October 13 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. with pre-registration required. Cost is just $14.
Five years ago, Colfax’s own Kelli Collins and her dad, Bill Myers, began selling the family farm’s whole wheat directly to consumers through Joesephsgrainery.com. After getting many questions about how to use the grain, Kelli decided it was time to start blogging her favorite whole wheat recipes. Participants in the bread making class will receive Kelli’s recipes, cooking tips, and tasty samples along with a tour from her dad at the Grainery.

Avista Foundation honored by Whitman County Library

The Avista Foundation was recently named Whitman County Library Supporter of the month during an award ceremony at the company’s Spokane Headquarters. The Foundation recently donated $10,000 to the Bettie Steiger Community Enrichment Center in Colfax to update the building’s Main Street façade. Additionally, the Foundation has long supported library projects ranging from countywide Summer Reading sponsorship to the funding of open hours in the Malden Library. Avista has assisted with a number of energy upgrades and provided financial support for building renovations in Endicott, Colfax and other branch locations.

Accepting the award on behalf of the Avista Foundation were Kristi Meyer, Director along with Paul Kimmel, Business and Public Affairs Director for the Palouse Region.

The Board of Trustees, administration and Friends of the Whitman County Rural Library District sponsor the Library Supporter of the Month award as a way of recognizing individuals and groups that play an invaluable role in supporting and supplementing the library’s budget and activities. Youth Programs at the Colfax Library

The Colfax Library is pleased to announce an exciting lineup of programs for children and teens this fall:

• Newest to the lineup is Wazzu Wednesdays. Students ages 12 and up are encouraged to attend each Wednesday afterschool from 2:30-4:30 p.m. to explore technology, art science and the community with student mentors from Washington State University. Teens will also enjoy snacks, play games and receive homework assistance as needed.  Programs through September focus on learning bicycle components, maintenance, and safety.
• For teens ages 12 and up a variety of programs like domino chain reactions, recycled art, duct tape crafting, book to movie events, and Zombiefest are scheduled.  
• For smaller children each Thursday brings Early Learning Storytime with stories, finger plays, rhymes, and songs. Baby Time is for ages 0-2 and runs from 10:10-10:30 a.m., Toddler Time is for ages 2-3 and runs from 10:30-11 a.m., and Preschool Time is for ages 4-5 and runs from 11-11:30 a.m.
• Each Friday, Play & Learn playgroup is from 10-11:30. Parents and caregivers bring their young children for any or all of that time period to enjoy educational free play time. Kids learn through play while adults engage with the youngsters or make valuable connections with neighbors and peers.
• Third Thursday Club is a popular afterschool program for kids in grades 1-4. The program is every 3rd Thursday of the month from 3:30-4:30 and features educational theme featuring stories, games, crafts, snacks and more. JES kids may take bus #16 with parent permission note.

Rare opportunity - free program Thurs, Sep 18

The community is invited to hear nationally syndicated political cartoonist Milt Priggee during two free presentations on Thursday September 18 at noon in Colfax and at 5:30 p.m. in Pullman. Priggee’s presentations are part of the Humanities Washington Speakers Bureau in partnership with local libraries.

The noon appearance at the United Methodist Church in Colfax is sponsored by Whitman County Library and Colfax Rotary. While the presentation is free, guests can call ahead to pre-order a catered lunch for $10 at 509-397-4366.

The 5:30 presentation will be held in the Hecht Meeting room at Neill Public Library. More information can be obtained by calling 509-338-3252.

Priggee’s presentation called Political Cartooning; Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow features the stories behind the cartoons and explores cartooning as a powerful political medium. Priggee says, “Political imagery can touch the heart, coalesce the truth and make people think. It can make a difference in the life of a person and a country.”

Milt Priggee has been a professional political cartoonist since 1976, including several years at The Spokesman-Review in Spokane. He’ll explain the “who, what, where, when, why and how” of political commentary as it evolves from print to digital-media platforms. The discussion will then turn to some of Priggee’s own cartoons, including some which were rejected from publication, and explore the stories behind the art and the importance of political cartooning as a medium.

Milt Priggee was born in Alaska, grew up in Chicago, graduated from college in Colorado, was a journalism fellow at University of Michigan and has drawn local newspaper cartoons in twelve different states. His nationally syndicated cartoons, caricatures, comic strips and illustrations have appeared in newspapers, magazines, books, websites, album covers, shirts and even wine bottles. A past president of the Association of American Editorial Cartoonists, Priggee’s cartoon commentary has generated hate mail, awards, death threats, libel lawsuits and many heated discussions. Priggee currently lives in Oak Harbor and previously resided in Spokane.

Colfax Library Hosts INBC Blood Drive Tuesday, September 23, 2:00-5:30 p.m.

The gift of blood is the gift of life! You can save the lives of three people by donating blood Tuesday, September 23, 2:00-5:30 p.m. Appointments are being taken by signing up online at the Inland Northwest Blood Center at www.inbcsaves.org. According to the Inland Northwest Blood Center, here are a few facts about donations:

1. Every 2 seconds, someone in the United States needs a blood product.
2. Although 60% of Americans are eligible to donate blood, only approximately 5% actually do.
3. It is estimated that one in three individuals will need a blood product sometime during their life.

Walk-ins will be seen on a first come, first serve basis with photo I.D. required. Donors should drink plenty of fluids and eat a meal at least two hours prior to arrival. Early Learning Storytime at the Colfax Library

Mark your calendar each Thursday for Early Learning Storytime at the Colfax Library beginning September 11.  Storytime at the Colfax branch is divided into three age groups:
BABY TIME for ages 0-2 from 10:10-10:30 a.m.
TODDLER TIME for ages 2-3 from 10:30-11:00 a.m.
PRESCHOOL TIME for ages 4- 5 from 11:00-11:30 a.m.

Storytime offers a valuable listening and pre-reading experience for children of all ages. The focus this year is “Learning the Alphabet from A to Z” featuring letters and sounds.  Each week a new letter is introduced with visual and phonemic activities, all planned to promote reading readiness in your child. Through stories, sharing, rhymes and songs children acquire information as well as an appreciation for the written word and fine illustration.

Storytime allows each child time to share stories and to express him or herself. At Storytime, children participate in a variety of imaginative activities that include finger plays, games, crafts, puppets, and creative dramatics. These activities help promote cognitive development and reading readiness along with maximizing the critical years in a child’s brain development.

Colfax – 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. – CCE After-School Program – Free after school fun for teens ages 12 and up. The WSU Center for Civic Engagement (CCE) will be here teaching us all about bicycles for the month of September.
Colfax – 5:15 to 6 p.m. – Fitness Circuit Training with Nancy Stanard – Fast and fun circuit training routines that make getting in shape a breeze. Cost is $5 per class or $30 per month.

Colfax – 10:10 to 11:30 a.m. – Storytime – Bring in the little ones for fun stories, songs and more every Thursday.

September is Library Card Sign-Up Month and the Whitman County Library (WCL) System wants to make sure that all youth and adults in the area have the smartest card of all – a library card.

Public library programming and the vast collection of books, videos and resources make a difference in the lives of people for a variety of reasons.  Whether you are a student at school or a student in life, the library provides engaging programs, reading and listening choices for people from all backgrounds to become excited and enthusiastic learners.

“A library card has always been the most important school supply,” says Sheri Miller, WCL Youth Manager. “Today’s libraries are thriving community centers with technology hubs that many rely on as either their first or only choice for computer and Internet access.  There’s a lot happening at the Whitman County Libraries and the best part for children, teens, parents, adults and seniors - is that it is free with a library card.” 

Activities at the 14 branches of Whitman County Library during Library Card Sign-Up Month include events such as Early Learning Storytimes, author visits, exhibits, educational classes, after school programs, and more.  The Friends of WCL help to promote this event by offering a chance at two $25 certificate drawings to those signing up for a new card.

Observed since 1987, Library Card Sign-Up Month is a time when the American Library Association (ALA) promotes the importance of your public library.
