Fresh topics on Brian Health, Addiction, and Autism! Come check out our latest books!

By Rachelle Ledbetter

Brain Maker by David Perlmutter

Astonishing new research is revealing that the health of your brain is dictated by the state of your microbes, the vast population of organisms that live in your intestines.  This book shows you how to nurture your gut health to improve your brain health.

The Biology of Desire by Marc D. Lewis

Cognitive neuroscientist and former addict Marc D. Lewis makes a convincing case that addiction is not a disease but rather an unintended consequence of the brain doing what it’s supposed to do – seek pleasure.

This groundbreaking book is an essential read for any parent, teacher, therapist or caregiver of a person with autism.

Celebrate the Freedom To Read

Banned Books Week: Celebrating the Freedom to Read

September 27−October 3, 2015

Banned Books Week is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read. Typically held during the last week of September, it highlights the value of free and open access to information. Banned Books Week brings together the entire book community –- librarians, booksellers, publishers, journalists, teachers, and readers of all types –- in shared support of the freedom to seek and to express ideas, even those some consider unorthodox or unpopular.
By focusing on efforts across the country to remove or restrict access to books, Banned Books Week draws national attention to the harms of censorship. The books featured during Banned Books Week have all been targeted with removal or restrictions in libraries and schools. While books have been and continue to be banned, part of the Banned Books Week celebration is the fact that, in a majority of cases, the books have remained available. This happens only thanks to the efforts of librarians, teachers, students, and community members who stand up and speak out for the freedom to read.

Author Bob Lonn, brings Korean War presentation & book signing to Colfax!

Author Bob Lonn shares tales from his book “EXCITEMENT! Shot At and Missed” during a public presentation in Colfax on Thursday, September 24 at noon at the United Methodist Church, 109 S. Mill Street. Following this presentation and luncheon, Colfax Library will hold a book signing for “EXCITEMENT!” from 3-6 p.m. at the Colfax Library where Bob’s wife Suzanne joins in to sign copies of her novel, “The Game of Hearts.” Contact the library to order the optional lunch for $12.

EXCITEMENT tells the story of Bob Lonn’s older brother Ken Lonn and his tour of duty in the Marines during the Korean War. Ken enlisted in 1949 and later served in Fox Company of the 5th Marines (F-2-5) of the 1st Marine Division from 1951 and 1952.  The book describes Ken’s advanced combat training in preparation for shipping out to Korea, including accounts of soldiers who did not deploy because of injury or because they were the sole surviving son in a family.

Once landed in Korea, Ken served as a Mortar/Rockets Section Chief, where he literally had a blast. In the book, Ken’s recounts some of his experiences with humor, and often remembers his comrades with awe and amazement.  While the war continued on, Ken Lonn returned home in March 1952 while his brother Bob, author of “EXCITEMENT!” went on to serve in the Marines from 1963-1969.

Bob Lonn was born and raised in Colfax, graduating in 1961. EXCITEMENT! Shot At And Missed, is his second book. For Bob, the driving force in writing the book is simple. Bob says,” Ken Lonn is my hero!  There are many Marines in our family.  Ken was the first.  He set the standard.  He plowed the way, so to speak, for the rest of us!” Ken Lonn graduated from Colfax High School in 1949.

For more information about Bob Lonn’s Korean War presentation, to order lunch or to learn about the book signing by Bob and Suzanne Lonn, contact the Colfax Branch of Whitman County Library at 397-4366 or visit the Events Calendar at www.whitco.lib.wa.us.
