The Center, an annex to the Colfax Branch of Whitman County Library is undergoing dramatic changes to its front exterior. Unfortunately, unanticipated problems with the building’s front foundation have resulted in cost overruns. As a result, $10,000 is needed to complete the front façade which is being funded completely through donations and grants.
To assist in raising the $10,000, The Whitman Samplers have
created and donated a lovely full-sized quilt called “Around the County” to be raffled
with proceeds benefiting The Center. The quilt highlights many aspects of our
region including barns, wheat, homesteads and even Butch the Cougar. “Around
the County” was beautifully quilted by Tami Drader. Tickets for the quilt are
available at any Whitman County Library Branch or at Palouse River Quilts in
Colfax.
Formerly Hamilton Drug Store, The Center was purchased with
donated funds in 2009 and named in memory of Bettie Steiger. With support from
Bettie’s family, Whitman County .09 funding, Avista and many others, the
facility has undergone nearly $100,000 in improvements including insulation,
repairs to the roof and a striking new adjoining with the library. When
complete, The Center will provide the region with a variety of educational,
cultural, historic and business related events, programs and services. The
Colfax Chamber will also lease space and collaborate on community events in the
facility.
Besides raising funds through the quilt raffle, the Library
Foundation will host “Soiree For The Center,” a fundraising auction and dinner
with Butch Booker as auctioneer on Sunday, Oct. 18 at 3 p.m. Kristie
Kirkpatrick, Library Director asks that you contact her if you would like to
participate in the Soiree, would like to donate to The Center or have other
fundraising ideas for The Center.
