May is “H’Art of the Palouse” month in downtown Colfax with a variety of ways to participate and celebrate the annual Banner contest sponsored by the Colfax Arts Council, including a month long exhibit, public voting and a community reception Thursday May 25 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
The community and all artists are invited to enjoy a reception for the 2017 artists and designs on Thursday, May 25th from 6:30-8:30 in The Center. People’s Choice and Juried Award winners will be introduced and their prizes presented. Past banner painters are also encouraged to attend, to browse the Banner Exhibit and visit with current artists. Refreshments will be served by the Arts Council and Friends of the Library.
Experience “H’Art of the Palouse Banner Paintings: the First 5 Years” during the entire month of May at an exhibit at The Center at Colfax Library. This colorful exhibit features many of the actual banners that adorned downtown Colfax light poles since 2008 and represents an artistic retrospective of the community and the region. The exhibit will include signed, framed copies of the banners painted from 2008-2012 and also a number of full sized banners dating to just last year. An additional exhibit of 2008 banners can be seen at Colfax Rosauers as well.
As part of the 2017 Banner contest, community members are invited to tour downtown Colfax, from May 8-24 to view this year’s Banner entries on the downtown light poles. The public can vote for their favorites for the “People’s Choice” category, determining an adult and youth winner. Voting cans are found all around town, while prize donation containers are located at the library and city hall. A jury of artists will also select the Artist’s Choice winner of a $300 prize donated by Dick and Pauline Gebhardt.
