Amazing book and lecture opportunity - mark your calendar!

On the evening of Dec. 1, 2015 (7-9 p.m.), author Bryan Stevenson will deliver WSU's ninth Common Reading Invited Lecture in Beasley Coliseum. His book, Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption, is the 2015-16 Common Reading book that will be used in classes, residence hall programming, and events for thousands of first-year and other students in Pullman throughout the year.

Described by Desmond Tutu as “America’s young Nelson Mandela,” attorney and social justice advocate Bryan Stevenson authored Just Mercy as a call for compassion in the pursuit of justice.

Stevenson’s invited lecture is free and open to the public, with a book signing following his presentation.  For more information, go to CommonReading.wsu.edu.

Lego Contest June 22-26

Colfax Library Lego® Contest

Do your kids love Legos^®? The Colfax Library Lego^® contest is for grades K-12. Submit one project no larger than 11”x11”x11” to the library on June 22 using Legos^® incorporating the “Every Hero Has A Story” theme. Projects are displayed until June 26 and picked up by 5 p.m.
Prizes awarded to grade categories in K-3, 4-6, 7-12 on creativity, originality and theme. Awards announced Monday, June 29 during the Summer Reading program at 4:00 p.m.

Clowning Around @ The Colfax Library, June 29

Magic, laughter, education and entertainment sets the stage for Charles the Clown’s reading program at the Colfax Library on Monday, June 29 at 4:00 p.m. This family show is sponsored by the Friends of Whitman County Library.

Using books right off the library shelves, this program highlights the joys and usefulness of the library in a hilarious comedy performance with opportunities for audience participation. With 30 years performing experience, Charles has appeared on more than 75 radio and television programs, performed at the Roxy Theatre on Hollywood's Sunset Strip, Disneyland, Knott’s Berry Farm, and regularly at the hospital bedsides of seriously ill children. Charles is a recipient of the King County Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Humanitarian Award for Community Service.

COMICS - Family Programs June 24-27

Superhero America: The Comic-Book Character as Historical Lens

“Superhero America: The Comic-Book Character as Historical Lens”, a series of family programs by T. Andrew Wahl come to six Whitman County and Neill Public Library location during the last week in June. The program is free thanks to a grant from Humanities Washington and local support from Friends groups from both libraries.
Since the revolutionary debut of Superman in 1938, the American superhero has been a regular part of our pop culture landscape. In this interactive multimedia presentation, journalist and comic book historian, T. Andrew Wahl, explores how historical events and shifting social mores can be seen in the evolution of characters from Wonder Woman to Spider-Man. Using audience members' memories as a springboard, this conversation connects comic book superheroes (and the occasional villain!) to historical topics including war, the advancement of civil rights, and the societal impacts of technology.
