Help preserve local library services by supporting IMLS!

President Trump’s proposed budget calls for the elimination of The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). While many have never heard of IMLS, we experience its benefits through our local libraries every day.

Per capita, Whitman County Library District is one of the top recipients of IMLS grants in Washington State.  IMLS funding supports early literacy efforts, downloadable eBooks and audio books, technology classes for kids and adults (from Lego Mindstorms and Kids Coding Camps to software and hardware instruction for adults and seniors), technology equipment and telecommunication upgrades, The Rural Heritage online collection, services to the blind and physically handicapped, staff and board training and others.

Pick your favorite library service and IMLS likely played a hand in it. And, even if you don’t use the library, your family, friends, and neighbors probably do. Last year attendance at Whitman County Library classes and programs reached an all-time high of 39,000, traditional checkouts were steady at 121,000 and use of eBooks and other online resources topped 43,000; strong usage for a library district of just 15,000 people.

You won’t see a better return on your investment than tax support for libraries. Whitman County Library spends a relatively small amount to effectively educate and support people in every age group and from every walk of life. IMLS funds stretch our local dollars, insuring us access to reliable information and innovative services, resources that are taken for granted and easily afforded by our urban counterparts.

If local library service is important to you, I encourage you to call Representative Cathy McMorris Rodgers at 509-353-2374 or in Washington DC at 202-225-2006. To contact information for President Trump, our state senators or other legislators who represent us all visit https://www.usa.gov/elected-officials or call the library at 877-733-3375 for assistance.

Sincerely,

Dan and Joyce Leonard receive statewide honor -

Colton Couple Honored with AARP Andrus Award
Highest state award for volunteer service

SEATTLE, WA - Dan and Joyce Leonard of Colton have been recognized by AARP Washington for exemplary volunteerism and community service. AARP Washington recognized Dan and Joyce, along with two others, as part of the 2016 AARP Andrus Award for Community Service. The Andrus Award is AARP’s most prestigious and visible state volunteer award for community service to honor individuals and couples for their remarkable volunteer efforts that have greatly benefited their communities, supported AARP’s vision and mission, and inspired other volunteers. In Dan and Joyce’s honor, AARP is donating $500 to the charity of their choice, the Whitman County Rural Library District.
Dan and Joyce Leonard were nominated for their work as Statewide Health Insurance Benefits Advisors (SHIBA) volunteers for many years. Joyce started in August, 2009 and Dan followed in January, 2011. SHIBA is a free and unbiased service of the Office of the Washington State Insurance commissioner that provides one-on-one assistance to residents in an effort to help unravel the mysteries of Medicare. In November alone, Dan and Joyce drove more than 600 miles visiting libraries in Whitman County to provide SHIBA’s counseling services. They often work at several libraries in a single day. Dan and Joyce developed a systematic plan in an effort to assist as many people as possible during Medicare Open Enrollment periods. They recognized a need in their rural county and decided that it was their duty to act.
“The impact the Leonards have had upon area seniors is immeasurable, “said Kristie Kirkpatrick, director of Whitman County Rural Library District. “From saving participants thousands of dollars to bringing peace of mind for those struggling to understand the confusing process, their efforts have meant the world. You won’t meet nicer, more caring people than Dan and Joyce. I am so pleased they are receiving this well-deserved honor.”
“This award acts as a symbol to the public that we can all work together for positive social change,” says AARP Washington State Director Doug Shadel.  “AARP has long valued the spirit of volunteerism and the important contributions volunteers make to their communities, neighbors, and the programs they serve.”
The Award is named after AARP’s Founder, Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus. AARP’s commitment to volunteer service can be traced back to Dr. Andrus, whose motto “to serve, not to be served” has shaped the AARP community service efforts at the national, state, and local levels. Each year, AARP honors the legacy of Dr. Andrus with the AARP Washington Andrus Award for Community Service in each state.

Community Reception - Join the fun!

Come Celebrate!
Friday, Mar. 10 from 5-7 p.m.
Exhibit - Why I moved to Colfax
Yummy appetizers, no host beer & wine!

Colfax, WA - Why did Tom Mohr move to Colfax? That was the question everyone wanted to know.

To answer the queries, Mr. Mohr has designed an exhibit of his artistic photography called “Why I moved to Colfax.” The exhibit runs from March 1-April 30 at The Center at Colfax Library with a special community reception set for Friday, March 10 from 5-7 p.m.

For the exhibit, Mohr provides a visual explanation of his relocation to Colfax through colorful landscapes and panoramas that are up to twenty four feet long and fill both rooms of The Center. Mohr also shares some of the many images he’s taken of community members including a gathering at Dave Morgan's 25th Annual Plow Day.

Tom Mohr was born in Rochester, NY and lived in New York City with his wife Jil for over 30 years. Graduating with a bachelor of fine arts in painting, Tom worked as a freelance photographer, as commercial photographer and in photography labs where he learned to separate colors and manipulate images. This work would later influence Tom’s images into a style he calls “painting with photography.” Tom spent his final working years in the art department of Barron’s Magazine retouching photographic images.

Then the unthinkable occurred. On September 11, 2001 the World Trade Center was attacked by terrorists and the world would never be the same. For Tom and Joan, who lived directly across the street from the Towers, their future was forever altered. Thankfully, they were away from home at the time of the attack but the tragedy caused them to rethink their lives and set a new course.

In 2002, the couple bought a fifth-wheel and began traveling in the United States and Canada. Tom photographed much of the journey which has taken them from Cold Foot, Alaska to Key West Florida, and also, a two year stay in Venice, Italy.

Finally, in 2016, the couple made a fateful stop in Colfax to photograph the Palouse. Tom invites you to his exhibit and also the community reception to learn why they stayed! For more information about the exhibit or reception, contact Whitman County Library at 509-397-4366 or Tom Mohr at 212-300-3694.
